Style of Mask:

Dan Mask, Gunyege

Catalog #: Dan2745
Tribe: Dan
Country: Liberia, Africa
Measurements: mask measures 8.75" tall (with beard of natural fibers) x 4.75" wide x 2.5" deep
Materials: Wood with inlaid metal with a natural fiber beard consisting of inner bark from a tree, traces of lime
Accessories: No accessories - stand sold separate
Provenance: Ex private collection of well known mid 20th Century American painter and professor, Emerson Woelffer who amassed a large collection pre 1970 (most of his collection was pre 1945 and we have photos to prove it, although this mask does not appear in any published photo of the owner).  Full bio and provenance upon purchase.

Cost: $640.00 stand sold separate
Notes: A superb REAL runners mask (most of those on the market are either contemporary fakes or ones of poor quality).  This piece is beautifully carved, showing excellent patina.  Of special note is the plaited beard  - which is made entirely of native bark/root fibers (not rope which is common today).  Very tight weave (nicest I've ever seen).  The mask shows excellent age and ethnographic, ritual use and use as a dance mask.  Nice breath patina on the inside and sacrificial patina with traces of lime on the front.   Holes are consistent in size and method of execution to a piece carved prior to 1960.  I would estimate this piece be have been carved and collected between 1940 to 1960, possibly earlier.    Click on photos to enlarge.
